Overview

 In recent years, aiming at the country’s major needs for energy saving and emission reduction and for the development of the strategic emerging industries, the School has developed five characteristic research areas, namely “the science and technology of chemical process intensification”, “new material molecular design and product engineering”, “environmental energy catalysis”, “coal-based chemicals and clean energy”, and “environmental science and engineering”, constructed the three-in-one innovation system of “basic research—technological innovation—engineering application”, which comprises over twenty professional research teams featuring academic frontiers and interdisciplinarity, and formed a team of academic leaders including Academicians, Changjiang Scholars and National Distinguished Young Scholars. Of the 147 faculty and staff, there are one academician double-employed by the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE), one Thousand Talents Program expert, three Changjiang Scholars Distinguished Professors, one Changjiang Scholars Chair Professors, four Winners of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, one 973 Program Chief Scientist, one Winner of the National Outstanding Youth Fund, and sixteen New Century Talents awarded by the Ministry of Education. With one Innovation Research Group funded by the National Natural Science Foundation, which is so far the only one for the discipline of Chemical Engineering in China, eight university-level innovation teams, and twenty-two professional research teams, we have developed a culture of innovation featuring “team cooperation, collaborative innovation, a pioneering spirit, and serving the society”. We have built two State Key Laboratories and two Key Laboratories/Engineering Research Centers at the Provincial or Ministerial Level. We are now capable of undertaking major national scientific research tasks. In the last three years, we have undertaken a number of high-level research projects including projects of the 973 Program, major projects of the National Natural Science Foundation, innovation team projects of the Ministry of Science and Technology, key projects of the 863 Program, and projects of the National Sci-Tech Support Plan. We have formed an academic system centering on “reaction process intensification” and “molecular simulation design of new material product engineering”, and developed leading technologies which have symbolic significance both in China and internationally, such as “supergravity intensification”, “bio-refinery”, “production of calcium carbide through the oxygen thermal process of powder lot”, and “large agitation combined reactor”. The direct economic benefit from engineering conversion has exceed RMB ten billion. The cumulative amount of research funds stands at RMB 283 million, and the publications of academic papers at 1168, of which 597 are SCI papers. There are three authorized international invention patents, 108 domestic invention patents, and eight awards at the Provincial or Ministerial level. Remarkable achievements have been made in international academic communication and cooperation as well. The research funds involved in international cooperation have exceeded RMB ten million. We have hosted five international conferences and been invited as keynote speakers for twenty-six times, which have all added to our good academic reputation internationally.
